Manufacturing activity in the U.S. contracted at a slower rate in the month of December, according to a report released by the Institute for Supply Management on Friday. The ISM said its manufacturing PMI inched up to 49.3 in December from 48.4 in November, although a reading below 50 still indicates contraction. Economists had expected the index to come in unchanged.

German Unemployment Increases Less Than Forecast

Unemployment in Germany increased in December albeit at a slower-than-expected pace with the onset of the winter break, official data showed on Friday. The number of jobless increased by 10,000 in December, a bigger increased compared to the 6,000 in November, the Federal Employment Agency reported. Unemployment was forecast to rise by 15,000.
