(RTTNews) - With exports slumping by more than imports, the Commerce Department released a report on Wednesday showing the U.S. trade deficit widened more than expected in the month of February.
The report said the trade deficit increased to $70.5 billion in February from a revised $68.7 billion in January. Economists had expected the trade deficit to rise to $69.0 billion from the $68.3 billion originally reported for the previous month.
The bigger than expected trade deficit came as the value of exports plunged by 2.7 percent to $251.2 billion, while the value of imports tumbled by 1.5 percent to $321.7 billion.

The Commerce Department said construction spending slipped by 0.2 percent to an annual rate of $2.193 trillion in January after climbing by 0.5 percent to a revised rate of $2.196 trillion in December.

MNI Indicators said its Chicago business barometer shot up to 45.5 in February from 39.5 in January. Economists had expected the Chicago business barometer to show a much more modest increase to 40.6.

U.S. Jobless Claims Climb More Than Expected To Two-Month High
The Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits climbed much more than expected in the week ended February 22nd. The report said initial jobless claims rose to 242,000, an increase of 22,000 from the previous week's revised level of 220,000. Economists had expected initial jobless claims to inch up to 221,000.
