It looks like it should be discussed! Starting $10,000 balance, now almost $1.6 million ... since Dec. 22. Yowza!

How much can I believe back testing?? I'm back-testing a minor change with my opening strategy, and the results are a bit crazy. The initial results I'm seeing are showing a balance of over $15,000 on a starting balance of $180. That's crazy.

I responded to this person, but told them I wouldn't give them account access (to be fair, they didn't ask for it). I haven't heard back .... hmmmmmm ....

I'm following someone on ZuluTrade that has a winning percentage of 94%. I'd sure like to know how he does it. I've never been able to get close to that.

This is my small account. It's real and started with just over $188. It uses the same EA as the other account so that's where I'm making comments.

Kind of an ugly day today with 2 losses. This kind of thing happened frequently during back-testing so it doesn't really bother me too much. I'd rather see gains, of course!

I could use a better entry point strategy, I think. I'd like to get my winning percentage higher. I'll take a look at the indicators you attached and let you know what I think.

Ouch, that gap kicked me hard. Most of my losses have occurred on Fridays, so I've stopped the EA from opening new positions on Fridays. That will hopefully fix any gaps like that in the future, too.

I'm using a Stop of 75 pips, but it also uses the Parabolic SAR indicator to determine the exit point so it normally closes a losing trade before it hits the stop. This is a wild guess based mostly on back testing, but I'd say it's probably about 40 - 50 pips normally on a losing trade. I know that sounds like a lot, but it makes up for it with potentially unlimited gains when it is right. At least that's the idea!

I can't knock a system that's working! It sounds like you're trading mostly manually, which in my opinion is better than using a martingale EA. You can make adjustments on the fly but you can't with an EA. Your success speaks for itself, so keep up the good work!Any system is going to have ups and downs. The main thing is to believe in it and stick to it ... if it's working. The system I'm using now is a new EA I wrote that is non-martingale, but I've only been running it for a few days so it's too early to tell. It backtested great but we all know that...

Which system are you talking about? Is it "Scalp for Profit"? If it is, I don't see a martingale component.

Continuing with the Roulette analogy ... a martingale that uses a good trading strategy is analogous to adding red spaces on the roulette wheel to make your odds better than 47% ... 50% ... maybe even 60%. It's easy to see the more red spaces you have, the less likely you'll encounter a losing streak. The odds are less, but a losing streak COULD STILL HAPPEN. Odds are a strange thing. If, while flipping a coin, you flip 10 heads in a row. Are the odds any less of the 11th flip being heads? No, it's still 50-50.I still think a martingale can be a viable strategy *if* you under...

This is a great topic!I've written several EAs, some of which were martingales, so I have a few thoughts on the subject. With martingale EAs, it's all about losing streaks. If the underlying strategy can avoid long losing streaks, the EA can be profitable. However, market conditions are always changing and if a martingale EA starts suffering losing streaks of 4 or 5 trades then it's time to get out or re-optimize the EA.As an EA designer I know one thing for sure, it's a lot easier to write a profitable martingale EA than non-martingale. That's because the martingale st...

Started a new EA on Feb 13 which is why history goes back that far.I'm excited about this EA. It's the first non-martingale EA I've written that has done very well in back testing. It was able to turn $180 into just over $3000 in a little more than 3 months. I know real life can be much different than back testing so I have it running on 2 real accounts. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

FXDD is my broker and I was looking around their web page and discovered they have 1-minute data for most of the pairs. At least it's giving me a better back-test.
MT4 History has big holes

Is anyone else seeing big holes in the history for backtesting in MT4? For example, I'm trying to backtest an EA for Nov 1 2012 thru current date, but when I start the test the date prior to my start date is Jan. 13, then it jumps to Nov 30 with a huge gap in between. It makes accurate backtesting nearly impossible! Before you ask, yes I went to History Center and updated, but it almost always tells me there's no new data. I make sure all the time frames are green before updating. I'm pretty sure MT4 uses MT's servers for history, and these gaps seem to be getting worse. I...

Upgraded to version 1.2. Better loss control and uses a percentage of the balance for the gain target rather than a fixed value.
