Oanda versus FXCM

Feb 10, 2015 at 23:25
At the time of the SNB announcement over 3,000 FXCM clients held slightly over $1 billion in open positions on EUR/CHF. Those same clients held approximately $80 million of collateral in their accounts. This was the largest move of a major currency since currencies started floating 1971.The EUR/CHF move was 44 standard deviation moves, while most risk management systems only contemplate 3-6 standard deviations. The moved wiped out those clients’ account equity as well as generated negative equity balances owed to FXCM of over $225 million. We believe that the FXCM system operated properl...

When you look at the changes we made to margin requirements, they fall into three different categories: 1. Some of the changes we made were required by regulators, and therefore we had to comply with these changes. 2. When you look at emerging market currencies, the banks and our liquidity providers were raising margin requirements to eliminate any potential risk of large gaps. 3. Previously liquid Western country currencies, like the DKK or CHF, which now carry risk because they are manipulated currencies, have become less liquid. The emails we sent to our clients with information about the ne...

Note that Skrill deposits are not available to FXCM US accounts. However, if you have an FXCM UK account, then you should see Skrill as a deposit option on MyFXCM.com. If you deposit via Skrill, you can make future withdrawals via Skrill.

@fx_book I'm glad you like FXCM's Trading Station platform and charts. 😄It's worth noting that the reason our minimum trade size is 1 micro lot (about 10 cents per pip) is because that's the smallest order that can be offset using No Dealing Desk (NDD) forex execution. While dealing desk brokers can accept smaller order sizes, it's because they take the market risk on the other side of your trades. That means a loss for your could mean a profit for them, or that a profit for you could mean a loss for them.On the NDD model, FXCM does not take a market position, elimi...

@medisoft it may please you to know that FXCM now offers non-US clients the option of depositing and withdrawing funds via Skrill. If you deposited $100 via Skrill and made $16 profit, you would then be able to withdraw the full $116 by Skrill.

@EDFx1 below is a spread comparison of US brokers that includes commissions. Click here for the live table: http://www.myfxbook.com/forex-broker-spreadshttp://i.imgur.com/3ryMmfv.pngAs you can see above, even when you include commissions, FXCM's spreads are very competitive. In regards to trading conditions, on our No Dealing Desk (NDD) forex execution, each of your orders is offset one-for-one with the best prices from multiple competing liquidity providers. That means FXCM does not profit from your losses or lose from your profits. Instead we make money from your trading volume. Below are...

@dazrobson Thanks for your questions. Let me begin by saying that if you had any live trades that were stopped out by the spikes you mentioned, I encourage you to file a trade inquiry so the Trade Services Team can investigate what happened: http://bit.ly/1lQlJ7ZIf there was an error in our execution, we will make the appropriate correction to your account. That said, I would like to address your general concerns about our execution. If there were any doubts before, it should be pretty clear now that FXCM does not benefit when clients lose on our No Dealing Desk (NDD) forex execution. 😄...

The $300M loan provided by Jefferies Group (a unit of Leucadia) allows FXCM to meet our regulatory capital requirements worldwide and continue normal operations. That means trading, deposits and withdrawals continue as before. To reiterate, trading on FXCM's systems continue in the normal course of business. It is important to stress that FXCM is not insolvent, has not filed for any form of bankruptcy, and is in compliance with all regulatory capital requirements in the jurisdictions in which it operates.

@evolutioncapital I'm not sure I understand your comment about being eaten alive by commissions. They are just one part of your total transaction costs along with the spread. You said your current broker has a 1.1 spread on EUR/USD and 30 cent round turn commission. That would add up to $1.40 in total transaction costs. FXCM's average EUR/USD spread is 0.2 pips which when combined with 80 cent round turn commissions adds up to $1.00 in total transaction costs. You can confirm this on the live spread table here on Myfxbook: http://www.myfxbook.com/forex-broker-spreads

Interesting point, however, Lehman held large positions in subprime mortgages which led to their downfall. FXCM does nothing of the kind. Furthermore, our No Dealing Desk (NDD) forex execution model means that unlike dealing desk forex brokers, FXCM doesn't take the market risk on the other side of client trades. That means we don't profit from client losses, or lose from client profits. Instead, we make our money from client trading volume, and I already mentioned our latest volume stats above.

@altagracia I'm glad you receive a response to your email, but I want to make sure you have access to the correct phone number for your location, so you can reach FXCM's live customer support which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your forum profile doesn't mention your country of residence, but if you send me a private message with that info, I can confirm the corrrect phone number for you to use.

@KZerind I assume you're referring to the Trading Station platform. It's worth noting, however, that FXCM offers multiple platforms, so if you prefer, you can trade your FXCM account using MT4, NinjaTrader, Mirror Trader or ZuluTrade among other platforms: http://bit.ly/1oFhcXq

@Irishmist While FXCM's new pricing lowered transaction costs for standard accounts holders, Active Trader accounts also benefited though perhaps not by as much, since the pricing on these accounts was already lower to begin with: http://www.myfxbook.com/forex-broker-spreadsSpreads are important, but they are just one factor out of many to consider when choosing a broker along with quality of trade execution, 24-hour customer support, trading platforms offered, charting, educational resources and safety of funds. It's no secret that the brokerage industry has been in the midst of a pri...

@Eric1704 It's my pleasure. Just to clarify though, the GMT offset is +2 as stated in the email you received. We can't automatically change the GMT offset settings on your EAs/indicators. As you have noted, some indicators don't even have a GMT offset field. However, if an indicator does have a GMT offset field, then you will want to make sure it's set to +2.
