Sensex, Nifty Extend Gains For Third Day; Financials And Adani Group Stocks Outperform

(RTTNews) - Indian shares eked out modest gains on Thursday, with Adani Group stocks rallying following Hindenburg Research founder Nate Anderson's announcement to wind down his short-seller firm.

Underlying sentiment was also underpinned as weaker-than-expected U.S. core inflation data for December boosted hopes for further easing by the Federal Reserve.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex edged up by 318.74 points, or 0.42 percent, to 77,042.82 while the broader NSE Nifty index closed up 98.60 points, or 0.42 percent, at 23,311.80.

HDFC Life Insurance surged 8 percent as it reported a 14 percent rise in Q3 net profit.

Shriram Finance, SBI Life and BEL rallied 3-4 percent.

Reliance Industries climbed 1.8 percent and Axis Bank added 1.7 percent while Infosys fell 1.5 percent ahead of their earnings announcements.

Adani Group stocks surged, with NDTV surging 9.4 percent, Ambuja Cements rising 3.7 percent and Adani Green adding 3.6 percent.

Adani Power, Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports all rose around 2 percent.

Tata Consumer Products, HCL Technologies, Dr Reddy's Laboratories and Trent all dropped around 2 percent.
