FTSE 100 Edges Higher As Investors Await Cues On Rate Cuts
(RTTNews) - U.K. stocks advanced on Friday as higher oil prices lifted energy stocks and investors braced for Fed Chair Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech later in the day.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey is also scheduled to speak at the symposium. The benchmark FTSE 100 was up 13 points, or 0.2 percent, at 8,301 after ending flat with a positive bias on Thursday.
In corporate news, Unilever was marginally higher after recalling 137000 cases of its single-serve Popsicle Jolly Rancher Frozen Confection Pop products over concerns that they may contain milk.
Energy giant BP Plc rose 0.7 percent and Shell edged up 0.2 percent as oil extended overnight gains but remained on track for a weekly loss on U.S. and Chinese demand concerns.

New home sales in the U.S. rebounded by much more than expected in the month of September, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Thursday. The Commerce Department said new home sales surged by 4.1 percent to an annual rate of 738,000 in September after tumbling by 2.3 percent to a revised rate of 709,000 in August.

U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Unexpectedly See Further Downside
After reporting an unexpected pullback by first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the previous week, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing initial jobless claims saw further downside in the week ended October 19th. The report said initial jobless claims fell to 227,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised level of 242,000.
