Can we do Day Trading and Swing Trading Together ?

Andrew, yes I use hard stops. RobustReturn is semi-automated. With that I mean that about half the trades are entered manually, but still following my automated signal. I use trader discretion only to account for news events(e.g. if I am close to a stop before a major event, I close manually as I am 99% sure the event will close me out anyway at a less advatageous price) and manual risk management. With that I do not only mean determination of lot size but sometimes I do not take a trade because my signal already has a similar highly correlated trade open. Other then that I really have to be d...

Andrew, indeed I can be long & short at the same time, on the same currency. I do this on some accounts. The account I share here on Oanda does not allow hedging, but I use it on other private accounts. The swing strategy (RobustReturn) itself does not go L&S at the same time. It happens when the short term day trade is against my swing trade. It is not hedging, but rather applying 2 different strategies at the same time.

well yes of course. Now what I would like to analyze though is the total of the combined "virtual" system. How does it fair to my usual system tests? Guess I can always create a file with the combined trades and analyze it as if it were one. I am the kind of guy that analyzes a system for 6 months or so before I go live with anything. I also know that system A + sytem B behaves differently then each system analyzed seperately (correlations and stuff...). seperate accounts would indeed be the start...

my main strategy is a kind of swing trade, but yes indeed I do take shorter term day trades within these multi-day swings. The danger however is that then these multiple trades are all in the same direction, so I must take care the total leverage per position does not exceed my own guidelines. In general I agree the 2 styles complement each other, and if the systems are well chosen shoudl smoothen the curve. I have not found good tools yet to properly evaluate the effects of multiple strategies in one account. By effects I mean proper money management so that risk is managed within my limits.

I look at statistical significance, so it surely depends on number of trades, but also standard deviation. 200 trades could be ok, but is linked to other system data as well. Keep in mind also the market conditions at which these 200 trades are made. Is it in a wide time range of different market conditions and traded instruments, or all within 6 months on 1 pair is not the same test of course.

Some items I value a lot are: maximum drawdown (how much risk is the system taking).During a drawdown, how does the system do money management (taking more, or less risk?)average pips/trade (because after slippage, commission is there still some left for yourself?)average win vs average lossPerformance analysis is a specialized discipline all by itself, and there is still a lot I can/should learn here. But the general approach I use is focus in on how risk is managed rather then profits.Oh and yes, social trading is certainly not all it is made out to be. That does not mean there are no good s...

In theory, spreading the risk is better. However, following more systems does not automatically mean lower risk. Considering the majority of systems end up failing, following more systems means increasing the risk you have a big potential failing system in your portfolio. Therefore, avoiding a system that has the potential to fail big is more important then having the highest profit potential systems. Homework is key!!

yes, I believe ATR is relevant. Lower ATR, lower stops, as long as you have some way of also looking at potential short term peaks. Why would you not look at your chart after exit? I know its game over for the trade, but every trade is a learning experience for the next trade. Why would you want to not take that chance? I guess you are trading a fixed system, so short term does not matter. I would still do this as in future you might want to have your system evolve. Not second guessing your system at every trade, but just a process of system improvement over a long series of trades...I also tr...

Trading can get a lonely activity, and threads like these can put a smile to my face in moments of boredom. As long as newcommers have expectations like these, there will be enough losing trades for the winning traders to take advantage of. Is it possible to win the lottery? Of Course!! but I would not make my life goals around it...

Hi Kurtis, I always like it when traders start a trading journal so we see what goes thru their minds. Some comments on your rules. I agree winning is more about not losing big, and the account somehow will go up. I am surprised to see in your rules such a tight dynamic stop. Everybody has different trading styles of course, but I would think with such tight stops you would get closed out all the time just when some official sneezes. It's tough to provide genuine feedback on your trades, since your history is private. I would suggest if you want a real discussion on your trades you should ...

Hendra, about the holding positions for months.. Although I tend to agree on the principle, I don't do it because over time swaps just keep eating too much of the potential profit. Do you have special account conditions where this is not an issue for you? I tried to have a look at your account to understand how you do it, but a part from the graph, everything is hidden so I was not able to learn from that. Any chance sharing the trade history? I understand people don't share their account details, however I don't see the harm in sharing a trading history. Any comment would be appre...

I take about 15 trades/month. I don't measure ROI monthly. The shortest timeframe I use to evaluate my systems is a rolling 3 months. With 15 trades/month there are just not enough trades in 1 month to draw any performance conclusion. I you want to see my statisctics, just click on my profile, as I am sharing my account here on myfxbook.

I am always on the lookout for good strategy ideas. I use Ninjatrader as one of my main tools for trade simulation, and code my own strategies. My experience coding for other people has not been so good. It usually is a question of them having an idea, but have no clue if it's profitable or not. I then spend many hours trying to code and simulate it, only then to find out that the strategy is not even close to being profitable and robust. I would still be open to maybe do this, but would like to discuss first if you already have some valid reason to strongly believe you strategy has profit...

I prefer swing trading. Not that I would argue day trading is bad. It's just that my skills and available trading tools are much better suited to be able to make a profit out of swing trades. Some comments seem to imply day trading is more risky. Not sure I have the same opinion. In my book, as long as a trade is open you are at risk. Swing trades are open longer so this is more risky then day trading. I accept this by compensating this with less transaction costs, and higher average profit per trade.

OK Andy, not the outcome we all wanted, but appreciate the approach you used and the integrity you showed during the process. You always stated it was a test, so I knew this stepping into it. All the best!

Nicholas, I had same issues. First could not get heartbeat for hours. Then there was one, but the time was completely off, and then I got all these alarms. Now heartbeat looks ok, but no trades yet today. Guess we missed the earlier signals. Let's see if andy knows what exactly happened.

Here's mine, but keep in mind I am also testing other trades on that account, but you should be able to filter based on the trading style.https://www.myfxbook.com/members/growthera/my-pfd-account/952239Yes, lots of scammers in this market, but I have enjoyed working with Andy so far, seems to do everything he says he does. Rare these days.....
