U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Climb Much More Than Expected
(RTTNews) - The Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits climbed much more than expected in the week ended February 22nd.
The report said initial jobless claims rose to 242,000, an increase of 22,000 from the previous week's revised level of 220,000.
Economists had expected initial jobless claims to inch up to 221,000 from the 219,000 originally reported for the previous month.
The Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average also crept up to 224,000, an increase of 8,500 from the previous week's revised average of 215,500.

A report released by the National Association of Realtors on Thursday showed pending home sales in the U.S. plunged by much more than expected in the month of January, extending the sharp pullback seen in December. NAR said its pending home sales index dove 4.6 percent to an all-time low of 70.6 in January after tumbling 4.1 percent to a revised 74.0 in December.

A report released by the Conference Board on Tuesday showed a significant deterioration by U.S. consumer confidence in the month of February. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index tumbled to 98.3 in February from an upwardly revised 105.3 in January. The University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index for February was downwardly revised to 64.7 from a preliminary reading of 67.8. Economists had expected the index to be unrevised.
